The EFL Would Be A “Joke” If They Punished Leeds Fans Claims Pundit

|

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but his latest words on the subject of ‘Spygate’ will find favour with plenty of Leeds United fans.

As the fallout continues from the earlier midweek press conference manager Marcelo Bielsa conducted where he spoke honestly and openly about the work that goes into assessing future opponents to leave us as best prepared as absolutely possible, some pundits have climbed a ladder on their high horses calling for punishment and calling points deductions.

The usually bizarre Ian Holloway claimed, I hope in jest and for effect, that Derby should’ve kidnapped our employee and duct tapped him in response and that it wouldn’t ‘have been wrong’ because he was ‘cheating’.

Merson showed a little more sense when speaking to Sky Sports News recently, saying that the only sensible thing to do was levy a fine on the club so the EFL were seen to be acting, but talk of a points deduction for something that isn’t actually against the rules, would be a massive overreaction and completely unfair on the club and the fans in particular.

“I’ve heard people calling for points deduction, that would be a joke. You’re talking about a massive club like Leeds, who have been out of the biggest league in the world for a long time. To punish their fans, that’s not right. If they found them guilty, give them a fine, but don’t punish the fans. Spying is not right and it probably isn’t wrong! There are no rules to say you can’t do it, my only worry would be if they go up they’ll find it hard to do it in the Premier League with the training grounds there. I thought he (Bielsa) was honest, I haven’t got a problem with it. They haven’t broken any rules.”

Nice to see that there is some sense out there in pundit land given the whining that’s filled the media in recent days.
