Steve Stone fell victim to a ruptured Achilles tendon during the opening week of pre-season training at Elland Road.

Surgery followed but infection set in and there were even fears the 34-year-old would be forced to retire.

But Stone returned to training this week.

Stone: ‘It’s been a long time coming and just to get myself back out on that training field is something special.

‘Two months ago I was struggling to get out of bed and walk. So you fear for your career and you fear for what standard of life you’ll lead after football.

‘You do hear about footballers who can’t walk and need massive operations and I was going down that road myself, but I got to see a new surgeon and now I’m hopefully on the verge of playing some part in this campaign.’
