The top two had to settle for a point apiece in a hard fought goalless draw at windswept Elland Road.
Leeds made one change with the injured Robert Snodgrass being replaced by Neil Kilkenny in midfield.
The conditions were playing a part early in the game with either side looking able to control the ball in the difficult conditions.
The first chance of the game came on ten minutes when a good diagonal ball by Kilkenny put Beckford through, his left foot shot went wide of the post when he really should have at least made the goalkeeper work.
This sprung Leeds into life and after a good advantage by the referee after a foul on Becchio, Howson`s cut back found Kilkenny on the edge of the area but a Charlton defender quickly closed him down.
Charlton`s best effort of the half was on twenty five minutes when former Elland Road favourite Frazer Richardson was allowed to advance down the wing and cross, Shelvey met the cross with a header eight yards out and put it wide of the target when he should have done better.
The home sides response was immediate and a great interchange between Beckford and Howson saw the striker just fail to reach a great cross into the middle.
Leeds continued to press and Bradley Johnson who was Leeds most inventive player in the first half saw his long range effort just tipped round the post by Elliott in the Charlton goal.
Leeds were forced into a change just after the half hour when Becchio under no pressure fell over the ball and needed carrying off the pitch to be replaced by Showunmi.
Charlton enjoyed a good spell of possession close to half time with a succession of corners without threatening Ankergren in the Leeds goal.
With both defences on top the second half saw less chances, Leeds best effort came from Showunmi when his turn and shot was turned away by the finger tips of Elliott.
Charlton enjoyed more possession in the second half and the lively Racon was causing Leeds trouble down the left hand side.
It was into the final twenty minutes before Ankergren had to make his first save of the game when Shelvey`s low shot was excellently saved by the big Dane.
Former Leeds midfielder Matt Spring was warming the keepers hands again soon afterwards, luckily for Leeds his long range screamer was straight at Ankergren.
The final chance of the game fell to Robinson for Leeds but his effort from the edge of the area sailed harmlessly over the bar.
A hard fought point between two sides with strong defences and played in terrible conditions.
Leeds will probably be happy with a point with quite a few first team players missing.
The result keeps them three points clear at the top and they remain the only team left unbeaten in the Football League this season.
