Leeds United captain Liam Cooper insists that all of the players are determined to secure promotion on the pitch.

It was revealed last week that the EFL have recommended the Football League applies promotion and relegation on a points per game basis if the season cannot be completed and that would obviously suit the Whites in terms of returning to the Premier League. Marcelo Bielsa’s men hold a seven point advantage over third-placed Fulham, with both sides having played 37 games, so if the campaign was cut short now, or shortly after it restarted, Leeds would go up.

However, centre-back Cooper told BBC Radio Leeds that there is no desire for that to happen in the changing room, as they are all desperate to play the full season and win promotion that way.

Will Leeds United be playing in the Premier League next season?

Yes

No

I’ve not heard of any concerns in our group. Obviously, I am only in contact with our group. We are not the type of club who want anything passing to us. We want to go and accomplish it ourselves.

Some may call us mad for that but, no, we want to do it properly and we want to go finish what we started. We’ve come a long way these last two years and it’d be fitting to get that done.”

Despite their commanding position in the table, Leeds will know more than most how things can change quickly in football. A remarkable 2-1 defeat at home to ten-man Wigan saw the Whites lose control in the race for a top two finish last season and they were defeated in the play-offs by Derby County after winning the first-leg at Pride Park.

But, the team had bounced back impressively this season and they were flying before this enforced break, with Bielsa’s men winning their last five games without conceding a goal.
