‘So that’s him sold’ – These Leeds fans react to club exec’s latest comments on sought-after ace

Leeds Managing Director Angus Kinnear has United fans taking to social media lately, after stating that sought-after midfielder Kalvin Phillips remains an important “part of our plan”.

The Whites chief was speaking at a fans’ beach party alongside Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani in Perth ahead of today’s pre-season friendly with Manchester United, and sought to assure the Oz contingent of the Elland Road faithful that the club are in talks to extend the defensive midfielder’s contract.

“We want to keep our best players. Kalvin is very much part of our team, he is very much part of our plan,” said Kinnear, as quoted by Leeds Live.

“He’s been back in training, and he’s training like an absolute demon. He came second out of the whole squad for the bleep test on the first day back. Adam Forshaw came first, but he’s an absolute machine.

“We are talking with him about a new contract, and we are very clear we want him to play football in the Premier League, and we want him to play football in the Premier League with Leeds United.”

Phillips’ current deal is not due to expire until the summer of 2021, but interest from Aston Villa has put a greater emphasis on tieing the Leeds-born talent’s future to the club.

Leeds Live noted alongside their quotes of Kinnear’s comments that the 23-year-old rejected United’s initial contract proposal two weeks ago, which Football Insider describe as well short of the player’s demands.

The insider publication claim a source from within Elland Road has informed them that Phillips is holding out for a new deal that would move him alongside our top-earners Kiko Casilla and Patrick Bamford.

The Whites duo have often been suggested to earn figures in the region of £30,000-a-week, however Football Insider now suggest their wage is closer to £40,000-a-week, while Phillips earns close to £10,000-a-week at present.

Kinnear’s comments on Phillips being a key part of the project have not filled every Leeds supporter with great confidence that the 23-year-old will still be holding down our midfield next season…
