After a fantastic 2018/19 campaign with Carlos Corberan’s Leeds United Under 23 group, youngster Alfie McCalmont is making the step up to the senior side this year and manager Marcelo Bielsa gave him a quick introduction in our first friendly of the summer on Wednesday evening against York City.
Having beaten the side 5-0 on the night with a brace from Jack Harrison, and further efforts from Kemar Roofe, Pablo Hernandez and Adam Forshaw, fans enjoyed a good show.
Having played his part in the game, the 19-year-old was pleased with his run out and he told the Official Site after the game.
“I enjoyed it. It was the first time playing with the first-team properly. I’ve been training with them since the start of pre-season, buying into what we’re doing, getting used to what they wanted me to do in my role, and it was a great chance to go out there and play my game. We’ve got a good side, and it was an opportunity to go out there and show it. There was a lot of one-twos, a lot of running in behind, we’ve worked hard on our shape and possession, and I think we showed that.”
Having pretty much taken Kalvin Phillips role for the night, the Northern Ireland Under 21 international certainly caught the eye of a number of fans and they were very quick indeed to put the praise in about how well he did on the night, covering what is a key position in Bielsa’s system.
Mccalmont was excellent tonight. Looked very comfortable playing with the first team. #lufc

They looked good last night… don't care that it was 'only York'. McCalmont looks up for a proper crack at the first team this season #lufc

McCalmont looked brilliant as well, played just in front of the defence and looked very tidy. Surely next in line to break trough?
