Swarms of Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media, after BBC Sport’s Adam Pope shared that Under 23s striker Ryan Edmondson has undergone surgery to his knee.

Pope added that Edmondson is expected to face up to eight weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from the operation, though the club have since confirmed that the 18-year-old will be out of action for the next three months.

Edmondson sustained the knee injury during training at Thorp Arch last week, and news of his lengthy absence will be a bitter pill for U23s boss Carlos Corberan to swallow as he strives to retain the Professional Development League North Division title.

United’s U23s took a point at Sheffield Wednesday on Monday thanks to a late own goal from Liam Shaw, which extended our unbeaten run in the youth league to ten games.

The result also saw the young Whites side move to within six points of North Division leaders Nottingham Forest, and are now three points behind second-placed Burnley with two games in hand over the Clarets.

Would Edmondson have improved the first-team?

Edmondson has been a regular for Corberan this term and last and was often on the scoresheet, too, with the teenager striking eight goals this league season on top of the 11 hit during our title-clinching campaign.

First-team boss Marcelo Bielsa has been reticent to award Edmondson any senior minutes, though, with the Argentine only handing the York-born forward 19 minutes since his appointment in 2018.

Bielsa also refused Edmondson the chance to leave on loan during both transfer windows this season, as he looked to keep the talent’s development in house.

Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to news of Edmondson requiring surgery for his knee injury…
