Report: Leeds star keen to avoid setback derailing promotion campaign

|

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is keen to avoid last weekend’s loss to Fulham derailing our promotion campaign.

The result at Craven Cottage allowed West Bromwich Albion to open a three-point lead at the top of the Championship standings, while our advantage over the Play-Off places was reduced to eight points.

It was also the first time that a second-side managed to get the better of Marcelo Bielsa’s men since we were beaten at Millwall in October, with the Whites enjoying an 11-game unbeaten streak between defeats in London.

Phillips is keen to avoid the slight setback of losing to promotion-rivals Fulham derailing our campaign, and is hoping that we can begin another solid run by beating Preston North End on Boxing Day.

“We deserved a point at least in the game and possibly three points with the way we attacked,” Phillips said, via quotes by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

What will the result be vs Preston on Boxing Day?

“We won’t take this defeat to heart too much though. We did all that we could to try and get at least a point.

“But we’re looking forward to the next game now, and hopefully we can start another good run.”

Fulham only attempted seven shots on Saturday to our 15 and of those, turned just three on target to our seven, per Sofa Score data.

Yet despite the dominance we showed in creating chances to break the deadlock at Craven Cottage, only two big chances were made and one was wasted while Scott Parker’s South West London outfit found the back of Kiko Casilla’s net with their only big chance.

Creating more big chances on Boxing Day than the mere number of shots fashioned will be pivotal to our chances of avoiding back-to-back setbacks, as Preston allow the 15th-most shots per game against them when playing at Deepdale with an average of 11.2 – only marginally worse than Fulham’s 11.1.

In other Leeds United news, a second club have entered the race to land a 5 ft 6 Whites man in January.
