Leeds are set to complete the signing of Lorient goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a permanent basis later this week, a report from a print edition of Ouest-France has claimed.

Meslier joined Leeds on a season-long loan back in the summer transfer window, and his since gone onto make ten appearances in all competitions for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season, mostly filling in during Kiko Casilla’s recent eight-match suspension.

Casilla did return to the side for Sunday’s 3-1 win at Derby, where Meslier was not even part of the matchday squad, although it seems that is unlikely to have any bearing on the prospect of an extended stay at Elland Road for the Frenchman.

Is signing Meslier permanently the right move?

According to the latest reports, Leeds will exercise their option to sign Meslier permanently following the season’s conclusion, with the goalkeeper set to sign his new contract with the club “at the end of this week”.

It is thought that making Meslier’s move permanent will cost Leeds somewhere in the region of €5-6million, with the condition of such a move being the club’s promotion to the Premier League, which was secured this weekend.

This certainly looks to be promising news for Leeds and Meslier.

Having been made to wait for his chance, Meslier has really impressed in recent weeks, and it does make sense for Leeds to secure someone with his talent long-term.

However, with Casilla’s own future at the club far from secure, not to mention the errors he has made on the pitch this season, you feel it could be worth Leeds looking to sign another ‘keeper alongside Meslier when the window reopens, ahead of that long-awaited return to English football’s top-flight.
