Report: Highly-rated prospect flattered by Leeds United’s transfer interest

|

Coventry City prospect Sam McCallum has told the Coventry Telegraph that he is flatted to have been linked with the likes of Leeds United.

The defender was touted as a player of interest for the Whites in September, when we reportedly joined the ever-growing clutch of sides keeping tracks on the highly-rated prospect.

Around 25 scouts from higher tier clubs were said to have attended the Sky Blues’ fixtures this season to observe some of their emerging talents in action, with Leeds’ talent spotters claimed to be monitoring Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion target McCallum.

Coventry only plucked McCallum out of non-league football in 2018 after being impressed by the left-back, who went on to make his senior debut shortly after his 18th birthday last December.

His impressive performances in League One last season led to a new contract that runs to the summer of 2022, and is now jousting with early season first-choice Brandon Mason for honours in manager Mark Robins’ plans.

McCallum is currently keeping Mason out of the side, having started nine of Coventry’s last 12 third-tier fixtures, including outings as a left-midfielder as Robins dabbles with a three-man defence.

Robins has also been key for McCallum keeping his feet on the ground amid the increasing interest in his services.

“I have been aware of it, but the gaffer has been keeping my feet on the ground and keeping my head at Coventry,” McCallum said. “He just wants to keep my head down and progress at Coventry.

“It’s flattering and shows I must be doing something right. It’s always nice to hear but I just want to do well for Coventry.”

McCallum has averaged 1.1 successful tackles per ninety minutes in League One so far this season, along with 1.4 interceptions, 2.5 clearances, 1.2 successful dribbles and 1.1 key passes, per data collected by WhoScored.
