With Leeds United ultimately failing in their bid to return to the Premier League in the campaign of 2018/19, it was inevitable that some players like Kalvin Phillips would feature pretty regularly on the rumour mill this summer given their development.
Phillips has been linked with a few sides already but the speculation wasn’t very strong, however, with Aston Villa featuring in those clubs namechecked, the Telegraph have claimed that the Midland’s outfit are preparing a £14million offer – but that we will hold out for at least £20million.
The 23-year-old would obviously be a massive loss for manager Marcelo Bielsa given his performances last season, but BBC pundit Noel Whelan has revealed that he doesn’t believe our Academy graduate is going anywhere this summer – and claimed that his agent has stated that the midfielder wants a new deal at Elland Road so he can commit his future to his boyhood club.
“I know Kalvin is desperate to stay at Leeds. I’ve spoken to his agent, who told me he’d love to stay at the club. There is no hiding that. The club need to put their money where their mouth is. I have no doubt Marcelo Bielsa wants Kalvin Phillips at the club, and they need to show him that he is wanted by the club. He is away on holiday at the minute and, hopefully, when he comes back, he can agree a new deal. He is a Leeds boy who loves the club.”
I think we’ll all be hoping Whelan’s words prove to be true here and we get confirmation of a new deal over the next week and a bit so this speculation can be put to bed finally.
With some in the fanbase having quibbles about investment from Andrea Radrizzani, Whelan is also probably right when he comments.
“It’s definitely a test for Mr Radrizzani. The interest in Phillips is real. You’ve got Bournemouth, I’m hearing Wolves and there is Villa as well. There’s Premier League teams that realise the importance of a player like Phillips.”
