Preston boss Billy Davies took the chance to give David Nugent a brief run-out against Leeds following a broken metatarsal in March. Back in time for the play-offs, the bad news for Leeds fans is that Davies believes the England Under-21 has had the effect of a new signing.

Davies feels North End, who lost in the play-off final last season, are once again ready for the extended season.

Davies: ‘We got the great news from the specialist on Friday afternoon. We got the green light that it’s now healed and it’s like a new signing.

‘This lad is such a threat, he’s a tremendous goalscorer, a great player to have in the play-offs and we’re all delighted to have him on board again.

‘We’re delighted to finish with three points, with the clean sheet record for the season, with six defeats out of 46 and we now look forward to the play-offs.

‘I really can’t explain how it feels to be in the play-offs again this season, to have that ticket again, to look below at the teams who haven’t made it and we’re very, very proud.

‘I don’t care who we’re playing. We’re on of four teams with a ticket that could take us to Cardiff and the Premiership and for this club to be there is tremendous.’
