Player Confirms He Was A Target But Leeds Missed Out On His Capture

|

Earlier this month, Leeds United were being heavily linked with a potential move for Alves attacker Ibai Gomez.

The rumour mill seemed to be linking us with the 29-year-old mainly owing to the fact that he had previously worked with manager Marcelo Bielsa previously in his career, and of course, with the unexpected Samu Saiz development and departure, plenty of outlets offered him up as a potential replacement as well.

Having now completed a move from Alaves to Athletic Club Bilbao, the player has told Mundo Deportivo recently that a number of clubs were interested in him and England was certainly an option for him with Premier League clubs sniffing around – but he confirmed so were we.

“Yes, and I took time over it. I had offers from more than one team from the Premier League, from the Champions and from Leeds as well as from other countries: Portugal, Germany. We have been in contact in another way and it was one of the options that attracted me. I was very good here with Bielsa, I had a very good season, but I didn’t think it was time to change country in January.”

Although it seems to have taken us a while to get into gear this month with the capture of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, I imagine most fans will be pleased to know that despite the deal not coming off, Victor Orta and his team were active at the beginning of the month and not dragging their heels as some suggested.
