Phil Hay rules out Leeds United launching new raid for £5.85m-rated former target – report

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay has ruled out Leeds launching a new raid to sign Abel Hernandez following his release from Russian Premier Liga side CSKA Moscow.

United were linked heavily with the former Uruguay international a year ago, when reports emerged suggesting the club were locked in advanced negotiations with the 28-year-old striker as he neared the end of his contract with Hull City.

It was thought at the time that the Whites were willing to offer Hernandez a contract which met his wage demands, as he would have arrived at Elland Road as a free agent on the back of a £40,000-a-week deal and without the cost of any signing-on bonuses.

The club even thought we were at the front for the 6ft centre-forward, but he went on to join CSKA Moscow in August, for whom he featured for on 15 occasions across the Russian top-flight and Champions League.

With just three goals, one assist to his name, however, the Russian outfit have taken the decision to part ways with Hernandez two-years early after mutually agreeing to terminate the £5.85million-rated forward’s contract.

He will once again become a free agent on July 1, but Hay believes United currently have no interest in making the 29-cap former international an option for Marcelo Bielsa next term.
