Other teams have joined Leeds in hunt for 19 y/o, meaning Leeds should change strategy – Report

Looks like things just got a little bit harder.

Albeit a move like this is predicated on the idea of Eddie Nketiah being recalled by Arsenal, so it might not have happened anyway, but at least now we have an idea on who we’re fighting it out with for his services.

According to a report on Football Insider, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach have joined the race to bring in Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster during the January transfer window. Recent reports suggested that Leeds were a number of clubs that were interested in bringing in the 19-year-old, but something like this could make them think again.

Personally I think that Leeds United need to step away from this and just let the other clubs fight it out, because this is a fight they cannot win. Given how German clubs have treated young British players recently, and then compare that to how few minutes Leeds United have given to Nketiah, do you think that Leeds have a leg to stand on when it comes to how they’ll be able to help develop Brewster?

Unfortunately, this is where Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa’s reputation might precede them, and not in a good way. If there are a number of clubs that are looking to loan out a player, and Leeds are one of the contenders, they might look at how they treated the likes of Nketiah and Jack Clarke and think ‘no, he’s not going to get the minutes’.

As a result, Leeds might have to change their transfer strategy. Rather than bringing in the young blood, they might be better off trying to go down a route with more established players, players who are on the down turn of their careers rather than on the up. Which there’s nothing wrong with by the way.

Would you take Brewster on loan in January?

Yes, absolutely

No, he isn't good enough

No, just play Nketiah more

No, he wouldn't play

And besides, when it comes down to the crunch time at the end of the season, I’d much rather have someone on the team that’s been through it all rather than a youngster who’s going through it for the very first time.
