Opinion: Leeds should sign £35k-per-week Burnley man to strengthen key position

|

Leeds United could strengthen their attack in the January transfer window due to a lack of depth.

Marcelo Bielsa has Patrick Bamford, Eddie Nketiah and Tyler Roberts at his disposal, but Nketiah hasn’t started a single game this season while Roberts is being used as an attacking-midfielder.

Which Leeds striker should Bielsa start?

Patrick Bamford

Eddie Nketiah

If Bamford picks up an injury, Leeds would find themselves in trouble. United have struggled for goals in 2019/20 (21 goals in 16 games), but could the winter transfer window provide a solution?

One player Leeds targeted over the summer was Matej Vydra, but they failed to land his signature. The 27-year-old could be available in January, however, as he’s struggled for playing time at Burnley.

Vydra, who has scored just two goals in 22 games for the Clarets, has racked up only 58 minutes of Premier League football this season. The £35k-per-week striker could jump at the chance to join a side willing to give him more opportunities, but it remains to be seen if Leeds will return for the Czech Republic international.

Despite being on the periphery at Turf Moor, Vydra has proven himself at previous clubs. He bagged 22 goals in 44 Championship games for Watford in 2012/13, netted 16 goals in 42 games in 2014/15 and scored 21 goals in 40 Championship games for Derby County in 2017/18. Leeds could do worse.
