“Not massively against that” – Many Leeds fans react to Phil Hay’s update on move for £7m man

|

Many Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media, after The Athletic’s Phil Hay claimed that the club will not be pursuing a deal for Burnley striker Matej Vydra in January.

Reports by Italian publication Mondo Udinese toward the end of November claimed that United chiefs had finalised a deal to bring Vydra to Elland Road, with it expected that the mid-season transfer would set us back around £7million.

Vydra joined Udinese Calcio from Banik Ostrava in his native Croatia in 2010 and spent five years at the Serie A side before joining Watford in 2015, but made just four first-team outings with the Stadio Friuli natives between various loan spells away.

His move to Vicarage Road led to 38 goals in 95 games before joining Derby County, where he hit 27 in 80 games and secured a transfer to the Premier League with Burnley for £11million following links with the Whites.

The 27-year-old is now completely out of favour at Turf Moor under Sean Dyche, who has awarded Vydra just 58 minutes of top-flight action across five substitute outings this term. He has also not been included in any of the Clarets’ last three matchday squads.

Vydra will not be earning any minutes in West Yorkshire come 2020, though, as Hay has stated that Leeds chiefs will look to stick with Marcelo Bielsa’s current frontline of Patrick Bamford and Eddie Nketiah, unless Arsenal recall the England U21 striker.
