Did he or didn’t he? Luton boss Mike Newell was left counting the cost of dropping three points, but placed the blame on the referee.

Newell blew his top saying Leeds defender Sean Gregan handled Steve Howard’s ball into the penalty area.

Newell: ‘It was handball from Gregan, and everyone in the ground saw it. It was a penalty and it changed the game – because they went down the other end and scored.

‘It’s a double whammy, but the referee didn’t want to discuss it. It was a mistake, and you just wish they would explain their decision when they make mistakes.

‘They don’t have the same onus on them to explain their mistakes. It’s not just the referee but the linesman as well, who was only 15 yards away.

‘Everywhere we go, we create chances and play good football – but we’re not getting results. It’s becoming more than frustrating, but I’m pleased with the way we played.

‘We’ve been done by a five-minute spell in the second-half, but apart from that there wasn’t a lot to worry us.’
