“Neither he nor the club know exactly how this will play out”: Phil Hay shares Leeds player update ahead of uncertain summer

Kiko Casilla faces an uncertain future at Leeds United and it remains unclear as to whether he will be at Elland Road next season.

The Spaniard has been number one for Marcelo Bielsa since he joined from Real Madrid in the January window last year, despite several high-profile mistakes, including one in the play-off semi-final defeat against Derby County.

Yet, he kept his place for the current campaign and in fairness the keeper had improved, keeping 15 clean sheets in 35 games so far. However, his season has been overshadowed after he received an eight-game ban prior to this enforced break after he was found guilty of using racist language towards Charlton’s Jonathan Leko in a game way back in September.

The stopper has only served two of those games so far, with a further six to come, meaning he will be available for the last three fixtures at best. But, with Illan Meslier impressing in his absence, the likelihood is that he may not feature again.

And, The Athletic reporter Phil Hay suggested Casilla may have played his last game for the club, as he admitted nobody knows what the future holds for the 33-year-old, who has damaged his reputation because of this incident.

Beyond this season, neither he nor the club know exactly how this will play out. The past few months have done a lot of damage to Casilla’s reputation and whether you think the guilty verdict was right or wrong, this is a very difficult environment for him to live and play in.

A decision on whether he stays or goes will come when the transfer window opens.”

Shifting the keeper may not be easy for the Whites though, as Casilla is contracted to stay at the club until the summer of 2023, having signed a long-term deal when he joined.
