Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has suggested that the Whites should be aiming for better than Cameron Brannagan after the Oxford man was linked with a switch to Elland Road.

The midfielder has enjoyed a fine season for the U’s so far, scoring five goals and registering five assists in 30 games, which has helped put Karl Robinson’s side in third position in League One. However, they face a battle to keep hold of Brannagan in the summer, with reports stating that he is someone Leeds have been monitoring for the past few months.

Yet, it’s fair to say his potential arrival didn’t really excite Mills, who spent five years at Elland Road during his playing career. He told Football Insider that Marcelo Bielsa’s men should be aiming for better, particularly if they win promotion.

If they get into the Premier League they need to look a little bit higher. Maybe this could be one for the future.

Is he going to go to Leeds and play every week? I do not see that scenario happening. I think he would be better staying another season at Oxford and playing week in week out. The younger players are becoming a bit savvier and realising playing games is more important. One more year playing every week can get him a better move in 12 months’ time.”

It has been claimed that Brannagan could be able for a ‘bargain’ price in the summer as Oxford, like many other clubs, face up to the financial implications that not having any games in recent months will bring.

If a move to Leeds did happen, the former Liverpool academy graduate would be expecting to join a side in the Premier League. The Yorkshire outfit currently boast a seven-point cushion over third-placed Fulham in the race for automatic promotion with just nine games left in the second-tier.
