The Seagulls hit Leeds’ promotion hopes, but did their own survival hopes the power of good with a 2-1 victory at the Withdean Stadium to end a dismal run of four successive defeats and climb out of the relegation zone.

Robbie Blake’s penalty pulled Leeds level, but the match was won by a late Brighton goal.

Mark McGhee: ‘There was a cheer in the dressing room because if the season ended tomorrow we would stay up.

‘I hope to be able to persuade players to join us. But playing at Withdean is something like the third world in footballing terms and it can add to the difficulty.

‘The penalty was a petty decision, and it was a poor performance by the referee. I’m just pleased it didn’t cost us the points.’
