Many Leeds United fans have been tearing into Mateusz Klich on social media, after the Poland international missed from eight yards out in the club’s 3-2 comeback win over Millwall on Tuesday night.

Klich opened the Championship affair as the stand-in option for the suspended Kalvin Phillips, with boss Marcelo Bielsa favouring the 23-cap international in what was his 29th-straight start of the league season.

Bielsa’s decision did not pay dividends at first as the visiting Lions roared into a 2-0 lead, but the Argentine’s call came through after the break as Klich’s energy drove the team on to beat Gary Rowett’s side and move back atop the second-tier table.

Klich firmly took the match by the scruff of the neck following the interval, with the £2.25million-rated midfielder battling through but should have put the game to bed inside the final ten minutes.

The 29-year-old made what one fan called an ‘unforgivable’ error, by blazing the ball wide from eight yards out when the chance was arguably easier to score than miss.

Was Klich's miss the worst of the season (so far)?

Klich has not scored in the Championship since netting a brace at home to Middlesbrough in late November, as he moved his account for the season to three following a sole effort away to Barnsley in September.

Millwall ‘keeper Bartosz Bialkowski was never tested by Klich on Tuesday night, with neither of the midfielder’s three efforts requiring a save from the 32-year-old shot-stopper.

As well as taking the third-most shots in the match with three, Klich enjoyed the fourth-most time in possession (8.5%) as he took the third-most touches (104), with which he completed 65 of his 79 passes (82%), played four key balls, and made one successful dribble, per WhoScored data.

The Cracovia product also won three of his four aerial duels, made five successful tackles (100%), one clearance and one interception.

Here are some of the messages shared as fans slammed Klich for his late error that offered Millwall hope of a late equaliser…

In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has been urged to lay down the law with a 22-year-old.
