Leeds United coach Jesse Marsch gave his thoughts on the game after Leeds and Everton shared the points at Elland Road.

The game finished 1-1 thanks to goals from Anthony Gordon and Luis Sinisterra, the Colombian grabbing his first Premier League goal for The Whites. Everton frustrated Leeds and looked to slow the game down at every opportunity, with a clear game plan from manager Frank Lampard. In the end, a draw was the minimum Leeds deserved after a second-half rally culminating in a host of chances and corners. Everton thought they had won it when Demarai Gray slotted past Illan Meslier only to see the offside flag raised. After a VAR check, it was rightly ruled out.

In an interview directly after the game, Leeds coach Jesse Marsch gave his thoughts on the encounter.

“Jesse that was feisty, was frenetic. Did you enjoy it, is it a good point for Leeds?”

“Well, for me it wasn’t frenetic enough it was too, too many pauses in the match with Everton taking forever on goal kicks and throw-ins and all these different things but clearly they wanted to take the energy out of Elland road, but I think you know, when I see that there’s the play in the second half that is just barely offside, of course, we were trying to push the game and find the winner, but I think we also have to understand that it was a dangerous game for Everton, they stuck to the way that they wanted to play, and the point is, okay.”

“Louis Sinisterra one Premier League start, one goal.”

“Yeah, no, we really like him. He’s a dangerous player, he’s very clever, his combination of athleticism and football sense is is unique, and so you know, I know that with more and more time, he’s going to continue to get better and better. So I was really happy for him. I’m really happy for him.”

“As happy as you were, is there a disappointment with regard to Rodrigo, how bad was it? Is it a dislocated shoulder?”

“Yeah, you know with a dislocated shoulder then it’s always, it’s obviously very painful when it happens, and then it’s just a matter of how much damage was done when it popped out. He seems to be okay, but they’ll do a scan and then we’ll see exactly where it’s at. These things can be like a week and they can be like two months, you know, so obviously, we hope for it to be more of the week variety.”

“Any complaint towards Jordan Pickford for the challenge or maybe the reaction afterwards?”

“No, I think the arm maybe got caught a little bit. I don’t I don’t take any malice from that.”

“I think there was one or two people notice that maybe he was laughing, smiling?”

“ok, I didn’t see that, that would, that would obviously then not be good, but listen, it was a spirit of the game and I think that again, I really liked the way our team played I think we’re developing a good way, I really like our guys, you know we, we’re not perfect but man we put a lot into it and we’re learning and getting better so that, from where I stand I’m really proud to be their coach.”

“Are you getting used to this English football midweek under the lights?”

“Well, I mean, this, every game is so good, you know and the I keep saying the margin of error and on this case, or the margin of success and failure is so thin and in this case with an offside line, you know, that’s what the league is and you have to be up for every challenge. So that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
