Leeds United have an illustrious history but one night that still hurts many Whites fans came on this day in 1975.
Jimmy Armfield’s side were playing Bayern Munich in the European Cup final as the club looked to win the big trophy for the first time ever. However, in a hugely controversial clash, the Yorkshire outfit would eventually lose 2-0, with goals from Franz Roth and Gerd Muller ensuring the Germans won the cup.
Will Leeds United be playing in the Premier League next season?
Yes
No
That didn’t tell the whole story though, with Franz Beckenbauer, who has since admitted Bayern were lucky, appearing to foul Allan Clarke in the box in the first half and Peter Lorimer scored a fine volley that was incredibly ruled out for an offside, which would’ve put Leeds one up.
📅 A game that needed VAR! #OnThisDay in 1975, Peter Lorimer scored in the European Cup Final with a superb volley. It was ruled offside 🤷♂️ pic.twitter.com/dtlGjQd6fz

With the game coming on this day 45 years ago, the club looked back to the disallowed goal on Twitter and it unsurprisingly still upsets many fans out there, who feel Europe’s biggest prize should have come back to Elland Road. Here we look at some of the comments…
Honestly a joke how long it takes Beckenbauer to put his hand up and decide something must’ve been wrong!

I remember watching the game as a young boy and couldn’t believe the decisions that went against us. We outplayed them but just weren’t ‘allowed’ to win.

Why has there never been an inquiry into this result, like many others around this time?
Makes me sick to see Bayern with their stars above their badge, one of them is ours.
