Vital Leeds contributor Huntersboots as got on his box once again and gives us his views on the so called ‘players looking tired` debate that is regularly spoken about across the Leeds forums.
A number of players have apparently looked tired towards the end of the season, with John Howson and Robert Snodgrass regularly mentioned as overplayed and tired from the exertions of a Football League season.
Over to Huntersboots:
I had to giggle at a couple of comments on a thread on the Vital Leeds forum concerning player fatigue, in this case Howson:
‘Tired after 50 appearances`. ‘He looked it at times and needs a rest`.
I have just been reading a report on the title winning Leeds season of 1968/69 when, with a first team squad of 18, (14 regulars) playing 56 games, with 9 players all playing over 50 times.
This is on gluepot pitches, brutal tackling and 20 fags and 20 pints a week. What has happened? Get ’em on the weeds and Tetley`s and watch ’em go.’
Are they really that tired at 22 years old? Not just Jonny, even Snodgrass (at 23/24) was deemed to be tired and needed a long earned rest from that scourge, namely the fiendish 90 minutes of hard graft every week.
I find this remarkable that they could be in need of some sort of convalescence from this gruelling occupation, especially when I watched my local news last night. What I saw was a true athlete.
A man was running a marathon for charity. Nothing new there, except he was running a few, 66 to be precise, yes that is sixty-six. Just for good measure, he ran them consecutively in 66 days.
That’s right, one a day for sixty-six days. Did I mention these were no ordinary marathons? They were ultra marathons, 31 miles.
If you think that was hard, he suffered an Achilles tendon injury on his second marathon and ran the next 64 in pain! Day after day, week after week.
If that hasn’t impressed you yet, how about his age? Younger than Snodgrass or Jonny? No, older than the pair of them combined, 50 years old, yes fifty.
At the end of his interview, he said he might take a couple of weeks off before his next project.
It really makes me wonder if we are starting to be sucked into all this ‘tired’ hype. I think its rubbish, anyone disagree?
