Leeds United manager Neil Warnock has explained the latest on the situation with club captain Robert Snodgrass and his future at the club.
Snodgrass has twelve months remaining on his current deal at Elland Road and Warnock has stated previously that he would like to build his side around Snodgrass next season.
Leeds have offered Snodgrass a new deal, which would make him the highest earner at the club.
Warnock outlined the latest news on the progress with Snodgrass whilst being a guest on Yorkshire Radio on Friday evening.
“I am keeping him informed of the players I want to sign and all I can do is put forward my case. At the same time, I can understand the other side of the coin. Twelve months ago it was, Gradel, Johnson, Howson and Snodgrass and he doesn`t want to be left in the same situation again, so I can understand the player`s point of view.
“I am trying to do my best. Straight away, the chairman agreed and Shaun put it into motion and we offered him the best possible contract we could offer him. There is no ‘fudging it,` we have offered him the best contract we can offer him and it is now down to whether Rob wants to stay.
“He needs to decide whether we are ambitious enough, whether we have signed enough good players and he might leave it for now. He is not in a rush to make his mind up and he has to start next season on the same contract then he will be financially worse off. It is a challenge for us to show him we have that team next year and to sign a contract when he sees where we are going.
“If we lose a player that I feel we have made a good offer too then I get on with it. I do not want to lose four or five players but if I have to, then that is life and you cannot mope around about it.
“My gut feeling at the moment is I am not sure whether he will be staying. I would imagine his agents are talking to everybody and it depends on who comes in for him. They will then have to agree a fee with us and for us to let him go this summer, I know it will have to be a very big fee, and there is no getting away from that.
“I have told the chairman, if we have to keep him until Christmas, we will keep him until Christmas and if I get six good months out of him with the team that I have and he wants to stay on his old money, then good luck to him.
“I would like to keep Rob until at least Christmas and I have said to him, ‘sign your contract Rob. If we are nowhere near the top at Christmas then I will sell you at Christmas. If we are doing well at Christmas and then we do not go up then at the end of the season I will make sure you are in the Premiership and I do not think I can do any more than that.`
“I have told the chairman that it is important that we keep Rob. If there are some realistic offers for him and I have players lined up that I can spend the money on and I know I can spend it, then you can`t say never. We will just have to play it by ear with Rob.”
Snodgrass has played almost 200 games for Leeds since signing for Gary McAllister in the summer of 2008 and he has scored 41 goals, including 13 this season, his best return in a season.
He has also broken into the Scottish national side and newly promoted Premier League side Norwich City targeted him last summer with Leeds turning down a bid from the Norfolk club.
