Leeds United boss Neil Warnock says results like the ones at Birmingham City on Tuesday night are amongst the best ones in your career.
The Leeds boss and his players came in for a lot of stick after a dismal performance at Barnsley at the weekend, when they were beaten 2-0 by the team who were sat bottom of the championship going into the game.
Leeds came from a goal behind at half time to Birmingham to claim their place in the fourth round and a lucrative home clash with Tottenham Hotspur and Warnock felt his side responded well after going a goal down and showed their character.
Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Warnock, “These types of results are the best ones in your career when everyone is writing you off.
“We quite rightly got a lot of stick on Saturday. 5,000 Leeds fans told us what they thought.
“I thought we were a bit apprehensive in the first half and I think a lot of it was down to Saturday. Saturday was a massive blow because we were battered by Barnsley.
“We fought back well after going behind. We came back in the second half and I cannot fault the player`s character.
“It was nice to play some football, get a result and get a tie against Spurs and the fans showed their appreciation at the end.”
Leeds had trailed to a Wade Elliott goal close to half time after a first half of few clear chances. Luke Varney had Leeds best effort shortly after going behind but he sent his header wide of the post.
In the second half, Leeds upped the pace and controlled the game. Rodolph Austin tested Colin Doyle in the Birmingham goal with a fierce strike from the edge of the area before Ross McCormack brought Leeds level with twenty minutes remaining.
El Hadji Diouf cut the ball back for McCormack who scored his first goal for the club since September 1st.
Paul Green then saw a header kept out as Leeds looked for a winner.
Diouf scored the winner for Leeds when he beat Doyle from the penalty spot.
Former Leeds defender Paul Robinson was guilty of handling the ball inside the area and Diouf stepped up to cheekily chip the ball down the middle of the goal with Doyle already committed.
Green then missed a good chance to clinch the game when he fired over and Leeds faced some nervy moments near the end as Birmingham twice went close.
Aidy White cleared a Nikola Zigic header off the line and then Jamie Ashdown turned over a Peter Lovenkrands effort over the bar as Leeds hung on for a much-needed win.
Tottenham will now visit Elland Road in a repeat of a fourth round clash from 2010 when Tottenham eventually beat Leeds 3-1 in a replay at Elland Road after being held to a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane.
