Leeds United manager Neil Warnock says he is desperate to succeed at Elland Road next season.

Warnock is ready to wield the axe at the end of the season and make room for his own signings after taking over the helm towards the end of February.

The experienced manager admits he is desperate to lead Leeds back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004 and become the outright leader for most promotions as a manager in the Football League.

Warnock also says that he would not hang around if he did not feel he could gain promotion with Leeds next season.

Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Warnock said, “I don`t want to work many more years and if I felt we couldn`t get up there then it would be pointless picking up my money just to put a team out. I`ve never been like that.

“The chairman knows how desperate I am – and you can use that word because I am desperate – to bring the players in who can give me the success I want. The incentive for me is a record eight promotions.

“I was very pleased with his reaction and I`ve spoken to him numerous times this week. But how I feel at the moment is irrespective of anything. I just feel like taking the challenge on.”

As well as a huge clear-out, Warnock is also busy trying to commit his star players to new contracts at Elland Road.

Captain Robert Snodgrass and young defender Aidy White are already in negotiations over new deals at Elland Road and Warnock is expected to talk to Ross McCormack and Adam Clayton in the near future.

Leeds chairman Ken Bates has spent the week in the country and Warnock has been pleased with the response from his chairman with regarding his needs to have Leeds challenging from promotion next season. “I do feel that I want to put a team together for next season and give it a go. I don`t want people to see me as having a team who are playing out games. I want to have a team who have something to play for.

“The challenge is there, I know what I need and I`ve told the chairman what I need. He`s trying as hard as he can to give me what I require to make us successful. I`ll know more in the next few weeks because things are happening behind the scenes all the time,”
added Warnock.

Leeds have just four games remaining this season and look set for a mid-table finish.

Warnock admitted earlier this week that he has made up his mind about the future of the vast majority of his squad but is wanting to take a look at two or three others over the final weeks of the season.
