Leeds United chief executive Shaun Harvey says the club have offered a new deal to captain Jonny Howson, one of thirteen players out of contract next summer.

The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and Harvey says the club are now waiting to hear from the player`s representatives.

Speaking on the official website, Harvey said, “Discussions have been ongoing for a period of time and since the transfer window shut.
‘We’ve made an offer to Jonny and we’re waiting for a response.’

The 23 year old is Leeds longest serving player having come through the clubs academy and making his debut in 2006 at just 18.

Howson has now made over 200 appearances for Leeds and he capped a fine season last term when he earned his first England under 21 cap.

The Leeds born lad extended his current contract by a further year at the end of the 2009/10 season but after losing Jermaine Beckford, Neil Kilkenny, and Bradley Johnson on free transfers in recent years after running down their contracts, Leeds will be hoping to sort out a new deal in the very near future.

Leeds also have a number of other players out of contract at the end of the season and Harvey confirmed the club are also in negotiations with some of these players. ‘Discussions with all of those players who we’d want – and who you’d expect us to want – to keep beyond the end of their existing contracts have taken place or will commence shortly,’ continued Harvey.

Leeds currently have thirteen players at the club who will be out of contract next summer including Ramon Nunez, Aidy White, Zac Thompson, *Michael Brown, Lloyd Sam, Ben Parker, *Mika Vayrynen and Mikael Forssell who have played in the first team this season.

*Both Michael Brown and Mika Vayrynen signed one-year deals with the club with the option of an extra year.
