Leeds hopes of landing on loan West Brom winger Jerome Thomas seem to have been scuppered after the baggies admitted they sent him out to get some games under his belt.
The winger joined Leeds towards the end of November after failing to make an appearance for West Brom this season after he suffered an injury that forced him to miss the start of the season under new baggies boss Steve Clarke.
Leeds boss Neil Warnock has already admitted his desire to keep Thomas past the end of his loan spell, which ends after the Bolton Wanderers game on New Year`s Day.
It seems that West Brom wanted Thomas to improve his fitness at Leeds and assistant manager at the Hawthorns, Keith Downing says the player still as a future with the Premier League club.
Speaking in the Birmingham Mail, Downing said, “The reason Jerome went out was to get games under his belt.
“Steve found he couldn`t give that regularity of games so we wanted him to go out and get some football.
“It`s a case of go out and play as much as you can over the Christmas period and prove your fitness.
“We`re not shutting the door at all on Jerome.
“We can`t fit him in at the moment, so we want him to go out to play football and get himself fully fit.
“It was unfortunate he should get injured when Steve came in.
“He`s a good, consummate player who works hard at his game and it`ll do him well to be at Leeds.”
The 29 year old had yet to make an appearance this season until he joined Leeds.
Thomas played three games for Leeds in his first week with the club, helping Leeds claim a maximum nine points.
He suffered a slight hamstring strain in the win at Huddersfield Town last week that forced him to miss last weekend`s defeat at Derby County.
Thomas returned to training this week and he will be back in the squad for the weekend`s game with Ipswich Town.
Thomas is also eligible for Leeds Capital One Cup quarter final clash with Chelsea next Wednesday having not played in the competition this season.
Leeds have a busy spell between now and the end of his loan spell with six games in seventeen days.
