Paul Telfer was quick to say how much he enjoyed his time at Elland Road following his departure on Monday.
The 37 year old signed for old manager Gary McAllister in the summer but has not featured for new boss Simon Grayson since he arrived at the club in December.
The experienced defender made 18 starts during his short spell at United but couldn`t wait to sign for the club when the offer came along in the summer, speaking in the YEP Telfer said ‘If I’d said no to Leeds at the age of 36 then I’d have seriously questioned whether I had any ambition left as a player.
When you get to my age you see every game and every season as a bonus and I counted myself lucky to get an offer from Leeds. Obviously I haven’t seen the deal through but that doesn’t mean I’m any less grateful for the chance”
Telfer agreed to terminate his contract at the start of the week has he felt he had no future at Elland Road and didn`t want to get in the new managers way.
He still has no regrets about signing for Leeds and now understands exactly what it means to play for the Whites, continuing he said ‘The attention on every game and every piece of news is amazing and the loyalty of the fans is pretty unique. We went to Peterborough in October and took more than 4,000 of our own supporters and, with respect, it’ll be a long time before Peterborough see a crowd like that again. That was a one-off for them”
Even though Leeds are in League One he understands why people still refer to United has a ‘big club` continuing Telfer said ‘It’s the done thing to call Leeds a big club but you can’t understand what that means until you’re in there and part of it. It’s a special place.’
It`s good to see that a player at Elland Road shows the dignity to leave the club when he can see he`s got no future with them.
Maybe a few more should follow his example.
