Former Leeds United captain and current Scotland boss Gordon Strachan says he made a mistake by leaving Liam Cooper out of his previous squad for the World Cup qualifiers at the start of this month.

Cooper, who has only been included in the Scotland squad once previously, has been included in the squad for their crucial qualifiers against Slovakia and Slovenia next month after an impressive start to the season at Elland Road.

The 26-year-old has made 8 appearances for Leeds so far this season, captaining the side as they lead the SkyBet Championship at this early stage of the season.

Cooper, who is still waiting to make his debut, has been rewarded with a call-up to the latest squad and Strachan says he wasn`t going to make the same mistake again by leaving him out of the squad.

“He is playing well,” Strachan told his press conference after naming his squad.

“He is playing in a winning side, he is a big influence on his side and he is the captain now. It is big progress for Leeds, which is good.

“I probably should have had him in the last squad to be honest, but I made sure I didn`t make the same mistake again.”

Scotland host Slovakia on Friday October 5th and they then finish their group with a trip to Slovenia and they know two wins will guarantee them a play-off place as they look to reach the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998.
