Nathan Brien writes his first article for Vital Leeds in what is going to become a weekly feature.

His first article looks at the clubs defensive frailties last season that ultimately cost them a chance of promotion.

There`s no doubt that Leeds scored a hat full of goals last year, in fact they scored 80 in total. If the table was done by the amount of goals scored Leeds would in fact be second behind Norwich.

Unfortunately though it`s not, and the goals against were in total 70 leaving us with a poor goal difference tally of 11. There`s no doubt that next season is going to be a tough one, relegated teams from the Premier League desperate to go up and put a bad season behind them, and teams strengthening in the summer looking to hit the top two places.

What worried me last season was that fact that it was so clear to many on looking Leeds fans that our defence needed strengthening, stupid goals being conceded which in the end cost us dearly. There were not many games that I can think of, where Leeds`s defence has looked solid.

Paddy Kisnorbo had an outstanding season for us in League One, but because of his major injury is now being perceived as a risk by many of us fans.

This is why I feel this summer is an important one; let`s start with getting some defenders in, I have no doubt that if we keep our key players and strengthen the defence we will be a match for anyone in the league.

Let`s be honest, buying the right players is never an easy job, but sometimes you have to take a risk. Look at Swansea fans, when Brendan Rodgers splashed out £500,000 which eventually rose to 1.5m for Scott Sinclair, a lot of the Swansea fans where a bit shocked. He ended up sending Swansea to the Premiership by hitting 19 goals this season. What I`m saying is, why not start taking some risks and spending the money, it worked for the three promoted sides this season.
