Vital Leeds looks at the stats on the opening day of the season for both Southampton and Leeds United in recent years.

Opening day stats

Southampton

The Saints have a dreadful opening day record. They have won just one of their last twenty-two opening day fixtures, when they won 1-0 at Coventry City at the start of the 1999/00 season.

Since then they have drawn six and lost five, losing three of their last four.

The last time they won at home on the opening day was back in the 1988/89 season when they beat West Ham United 4-0 at the Dell.

Three of their last four opening day games have been at home, including last season when they were beaten 1-0 by Plymouth Argyle.

Southampton have played Leeds on the opening day already this century when Leeds won 2-0 at Elland Road in 2001.

Leeds have visited Southampton three times in August in the past twenty years, with all three games coming during the 90`s at the Dell. They won 4-0 in 1991 on their way to the League Championship. In 1995, they shared the points in a 1-1 draw and Leeds won 3-0 in 1999 when Michael Bridges fired a hat trick for the Whites

Leeds
In contrast to Southampton`s poor opening day record, Leeds can boast a good one.

Their 2-1 home defeat by Derby County last season was their first defeat on the opening day since 1989.

Prior to this, they had won nine of their previous ten opening day games.

This will be only Leeds third away opening day game since 1998, the other two coming at Tranmere 2007 (W 2-1) and Scunthorpe 2008 (W 2-1).
