Leeds United striker Davide Somma is hoping to score plenty more goals this season after scoring his first goals for the club in Saturday`s 3-1 home win over Millwall.

Speaking in the YEP, Somma said, ‘I really hope I can be a 20-goal striker at this level and I’ll give everything to do that.’

Somma came off the bench with fifteen minutes remaining, to make his first appearance in the league since joining the Whites in the summer of 2009, and scored twice to earn Leeds victory.

The striker scored within five minutes of his arrival on the pitch, with probably his first touch of the ball when Sanchez Watt set him up.

Watt put the goal on a plate for Somma, but having never scored for Leeds before and in only his second appearance, he finished with ease despite the presence of two Millwall players on the goal line.

His second goal was pure quality, when after a long ball by Howson he made himself a little room and drilled the ball past the last Millwall defender to give the keeper no chance.

Somma joined Leeds in a one-year deal last summer from Major League football in the US, after a successful trial period at Elland Road.

He found it hard to break into the Leeds side during his first season with the club. His one and only appearance came in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy against Darlington in November, when he came on as a late substitute. It was to be short lived though, as he suffered a hamstring injury within ten minutes of his debut and was forced off.

Simon Grayson decided to allow his new striker to go out on loan and gain some first team experience. He joined League Two side Chesterfield in November and made three appearances without scoring, before injury saw him return to Elland Road.

Somma was to raise his profile towards the end of the season when he spent the last few months of the season at Lincoln City on loan in League Two.

He scored nine goals in fourteen appearances for the Imps and his performances were rewarded when Grayson gave him a new deal, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2011.

Leeds fans will be hoping he can be the replacement for the void of goals left by Jermaine Beckford who left in the summer, when asked whether he could be his replacement, Somma continued, ‘That’s asking a lot of me but why not?

‘Anyone is capable of doing it here. We’ve got a brilliant team and brilliant staff. I scored nine goals in 14 games for Lincoln and that’s the sort of strike-rate I’m looking for here, maybe more.”

Beckford and Somma`s starts to their careers at Elland Road have followed a very similar pattern. Beckford was plucked from non-league obscurity at Wealdstone, by then boss Kevin Blackwell and struggled to break into the Leeds side during his first season with the club. He then enjoyed a very productive period at Scunthorpe United, scoring eight goals in eighteen appearances that helped Scunthorpe to promotion to the Championship.

Beckford then went on to score 85 goals in three seasons at Elland Road before joining Premiership side Everton in the summer.

Somma will now be hoping to make his first start for Leeds, against Leicester City, in the Carling Cup tie at Elland Road on Tuesday night.
