Leeds United striker Matt Smith was delighted with his own performance as well as that of the team as he scored twice in a 4-0 win over Birmingham City.
Smith was one of five changes to the starting line-up from the side that were beaten at Derby County before the international break and they all played their part in the destruction of the midlands side.
The giant striker, who joined from Oldham Athletic, was making his first start for Leeds in the championship and he made the most of the opportunity with two goals.
Smith scored his first on the stroke of half time when he picked his spot from the edge of the area and his second, a powerful header after a superb ball into the middle by Alex Mowatt. “I am delighted with my individual performance and the performance of the team,” Smith told Sky Sports.
“We needed three points today, it puts us back into ninth place, so it is important we stay in or around the play-offs.
“We want to give ourselves a chance and hopefully this will kick start us on a run.”
Smith could have quite easily have had a hat trick as Leeds dominated. Just before his second goal, he twice came close to scoring. He smashed the ball past Darren Randolph in the Birmingham goal only to be given offside by the tightest of margins and moments later, Randolph somehow kept out his close range header.
He was also influential in the air, continuously winning aerial duels as the Birmingham defence struggled with his height and the pace of Ross McCormack, who was a constant thorn in the side of their defence.
The two goals for Smith doubled his tally for the season and he will now hope for a run in the side after impressing on his first start and forming a formidable partnership with McCormack.
