LUFC Pugh – Clean sheet more important than goal

Danny Pugh said the clean sheet was much more important than his goal in the 1-0 home win over Portsmouth.

Pugh marked his return to Elland Road with the only goal of the game to secure Leeds three points in the win against Portsmouth.

It was the first clean sheet for Leeds this season in twelve competitive matches and after conceding three at Brighton last week the defence once again came under much scrutiny in the week leading up to the game.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson made one change to his defence, Paul Connolly earning a recall at right back, Tom Lees moved into the centre of defence and Leigh Bromby dropped to the bench.

Speaking on the Football League Show, Pugh said, “It was more important to keep a clean sheet. To get the goal was a bonus and the three points made it a good day.”

Leeds dominated the first half but only had Pugh`s header after fourteen minutes to show for their efforts.

Portsmouth showed little in attack but came very close to equalising when Greg Halford twice went close in the space of seconds.

His first header was excellently clawed away by Andy Lonergan and from the follow up another header came back off the cross bar.

In the second half, Portsmouth enjoyed more possession but a more resolute defence gave them few chances.

It was nearly all undone in injury time when Liam Lawrence saw his cross drifting towards the top corner but Lonergan once again got back to tip the ball over the bar.

Leeds will now be aiming for successive clean sheets when they are next in action at Doncaster Rovers on October 14th.

It is something they have not done since February and they only managed on two occasions in the whole of last season.
