Preston North End manager Phil Brown is looking to take out of favour Billy Paynter on loan from Leeds United.

Paynter has made just one substitute appearance for Leeds this season, on the opening day at Southampton. He is currently on fifth choice for a strikers berth at Elland Road with Ross McCormack, Andy Keogh, Luciano Becchio and Mikael Forssell all ahead of him.

Preston have a striker crisis at the moment with Neil Mellor, Ian Hume and Jamie Proctor all injured.

Brown may try to bring in Paynter before Tuesday night`s game with Oldham Athletic but according to reports the major obstacle on the move is how much of Paynter`s wages the Lancashire side will have to pay.

Paynter has scored just once for Leeds, ironically against Preston at Deepdale last season in twenty-four appearances.

The 27 year old might enjoy a move back into League One, having netted 29 times for Swindon Town in League One during the 2009/10 season before signing for Leeds.

Brighton and Hove Albion are also reportedly interested in taking the striker.

The South Coast club tried to sign Paynter on transfer deadline day but did not agree with Leeds on the valuation of the striker.
