New Season, New Midfield

Nathan Brien continues with his weekly article, this time he looks at the Leeds midfield.

There were a lot of debates about our midfield, the defensive side left a lot to be desired. This was evident in a terrible goal difference of eleven last season. With no defensive style midfielders the defensive was left exposed numerous times in season, conceding quick fire goals against the run of play cost us dearly.

With Bradley Johnson and Neil Kilkenny leaving us this summer, it leaves us needing two replacements. In my opinion the chance to finally bring in a defensive style player, we craved last season. For one I think Kilkenny slowed the pace of our attacks last season, took time to execute the ball. Johnson was used as the more defensive midfielder last season, and his positional sense was awful at times. I really believe that we can do better than those two, I think deep down a lot of Leeds fans were not gutted by these two departures.

I would love to have a balance in midfield of both defensive and attacking, Howson with freedom to express his ability more, and a player behind him protecting the defence. Last season we had a young inconsistent midfield and got away with it a bit, this season we cannot afford to.

Nathan gives us his thought`s every Monday on Vital Leeds.
