Leeds United head coach Garry Monk says they wanted to show a response after getting back on track with a 3-0 win against Preston North End.

Leeds came into the Preston game on the back of back-to-back defeats in the past week and Monk admitted it had been a difficult week following defeats at Reading and Brentford.

“It has been a hard week for the players and it was tough coming into the game on the back of two defeats.” Monk told the Leeds official website .

“We wanted to show a response and we go that, in the first half we were excellent and we came out strong in the second half, we had chances to go 3-0 up earlier than we did.

“In the last two away games there was a lot of noise because of where we are in the league and the opportunity we have, but we got back to focusing solely on the game and we showed what we are good at and capable of.

“We are a very dangerous team across the whole pitch when we all deliver a performance and it was great to see the rest of the group contributing to the goals.”

Leeds never looked back after Kemar Roofe had given them an 18th minute lead. Roofe, who was returning to the starting line-up, linked up well with Chris Wood before beating Chris Maxwell in the Preston goal.

Wood thought he had doubled Leeds lead only for the referee to disallow his goal for offside.

Leeds went in at the break two ahead when Pablo Hernandez slid the ball home from the edge of the area after an exquisite through ball from Roofe.

Wood and Kyle Bartley came close to increasing the lead early in the second half and any hope Preston had of a comeback were dealt a severe blow inside the final ten minutes when Alex Baptiste was shown a straight red card for an altercation with Hernandez.

Leeds put the gloss on a superb result in injury time when Souleymane Doukara fired past Maxwell after getting in behind the Preston defence.
