Newcastle United 1-4 Leeds United – After extra time*

*Leeds won 4-2 on aggregate

Leeds United progressed to the Third Round of the Milk Cup with a 4-2 aggregate win over Newcastle.

Former favourite Eddie Gray was by now the player/manager following the clubs relegation from Division One the previous season.

Having lost the first leg at Elland Road three weeks earlier when Imre Varadi, who was to go on and help Leeds win the Second Division title in 1990, scored the only goal of the game Leeds travelled to their fellow Second Division opponents up against it.

Newcastle included the likes of Kevin Keegan and a young Chris Waddle in their side for the second leg. They also included a young Peter Haddock who was also to play a key part in Leeds winning the Second Division title in 1990.

Leeds found themselves two behind in the second leg. Jeff Clarke`s turn and shot went through the legs of John Lukic in the Leeds goal.

The whites were given a glimmer of hope in the first half when Wes Saunders turned an Arthur Graham cross into his own net.

The comeback was complete with twenty minutes of the game remaining when Eddie Gray rolled back the years with a sublime cross for another veteran Frank Worthington to head home with a diving header.

The game finished 2-2 on aggregate and went into extra time. If the game finished the same, Leeds would go through on the away goal rule.

They didn`t need to rely on the away goal rule as Leeds hit Newcastle with the old one-two in the second half of extra time.

Firstly, substitute Terry Connor and Worthington exchanged passes with a well-worked one-two and Aidan Butterworth was on hand to fire Leeds ahead on aggregate.

Connor then exchanged passes with Kevin Hird and the young striker was in behind the Newcastle defence to fire home Leeds fourth goal of the evening in front of the travelling Leeds fans.
