New Leeds United boss Brian McDermott says he is looking to take the pressure of striker Steve Morison.

Morison was subbed on the hour in the home win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and it was met by ironic cheers from sections of the Elland Road crowd. He was left out of the squad against Burnley in midweek and McDermott says he has had a chat with the striker and he is backing him to come good.

McDermott told Yorkshire Radio, “I had a good conversation with Steve. He feels that he is better than he is showing us at this time. You have to remember that Steve didn`t play too much football before January. He has come here and he has played all the games.

“I want to make sure that Steve is absolutely right. Hopefully, he will be back in the squad on Saturday and we can get him in and around the squad. We just need to take the pressure off him a bit. He is a good lad, he works hard for the team and he just needs to get that extra yard in. Hopefully, we will take it from there.”

The Welsh international has struggled since arriving at Leeds in January, scoring just three times in his thirteen appearances.

Two of those came in the 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace, with his only other goal coming in the 2-0 win over Blackpool on his home debut.
