Leeds United boss Brian McDermott says anything can happen next season now the club have stability off the pitch.

Leeds brought the curtain down on a disappointing season with a 1-1 home draw with Derby County on Saturday to finish the season in 15th place.

With new owner Massimo Cellino now in place, McDermott is now hoping that the stability the club desperately needs will have Leeds going in the right direction next season. McDermott also pointed to the fans who have stayed behind the season this season and almost 30,000 were present for the final game of the season against Derby.

Speaking after the game on Saturday, McDermott said, “The fans are phenomenal. We have an army behind us and the fans can take us anywhere.

“We have to get it right on the pitch and we just need a year where everyone is going in the same direction, get the right squad together and who knows, anything can happen.”

Things looked to be going in the right direction around Christmas, with Leeds in a play-off place and a takeover at Elland Road close to completion with club Managing Director David Haigh part of a consortium set to take control of the club.

The deal eventually fell through towards the end of January as things started to go downhill rapidly on the pitch with embarrassing defeats at League Two Rochdale in the FA Cup and a 6-0 hammering at local neighbours Sheffield Wednesday.

Italian entrepreneur Massimo Cellino agreed a deal to buy Leeds and on a crazy Friday night on transfer deadline day, Cellino fired McDermott before being reinstated the following day by GFH Capital.

Results continued to go in a downward spiral as Leeds rapidly slipped down the championship table as a run of just three wins in twenty-one games had Leeds looking nervously over their shoulders as Cellino`s takeover at the club ran into April after he was refused permission by the Football League to takeover at Elland Road before winning his appeal.

Since he completed his takeover, Leeds have picked up ten points from a possible eighteen but many are still waiting to see if Cellino, who has sacked 37 managers in 22-years as owner of Italian side Cagliari, will give McDermott a second chance.
