Leeds will find out on Wednesday whether Elland Road will be chosen to host World Cup final ties in 2018 if the England bid is successful.

The fifteen cities that have put in applications will be whittled down to twelve on Wednesday, as well as Leeds, Sheffield, Milton Keynes, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leicester, Derby, Plymouth, Newcastle and Gateshead, Hull, Sunderland, Nottingham, Bristol, and London have all put in bids.

Leeds took representatives to London on Monday led by Councillor Andrew Cartar as well as Council director of development Jean Dent and Leeds United chief executive Shaun Harvey who were to make a one-hour presentation to the Football Association.

Cartar speaking on Leeds official website said “We have submitted a detailed and exciting bid which outlines very clearly why Leeds would be a perfect city to host World Cup matches.”

Leeds were chosen as a ground for the group stages of the 1996 European Championships and with ground developments planned if their bid is successful which will take the ground capacity to 50,000.

The FA around 3pm on Wednesday will make the announcement.

FIFA will not announce which country will host the 2018 World Cup until December 2010.
