Leeds played their third game against Northampton Town this month when travelling to Sixfields for an important League clash.
Leeds stuck with the same eleven that easily beat Hartlepool United on Saturday.
Leeds had a chance in the first minute but Andy Robinson`s shot went wide of the post.
Northampton soon hit back and Scott McGleish wasted a good chance with a poor header.
Northampton were having most of the early chances and Ryan Gilligan hit the post from distance.
Ex Leeds striker Leon Constantine was next to go close when his shot was saved by Lucas.
Andy Robinson seemed the only player able to get a shot in for Leeds but they were usually from distance.
Northampton had learnt from last week`s heavy cup defeat against Leeds and were quickly closing down the visitors.
The Cobblers took the lead on the half hour when Liam Davis`s shot from the edge of the area beat Lucas.
This seemed to wake Leeds up a little and Beckford had three or four good efforts that Fielding in the Northampton goal managed to deny the in form striker adding to his eighteen goals this season.
Leeds influential midfielder Fabian Delph got his fifth booking of the season before half time and is now suspended for the Tranmere Rovers game.
Leeds came out for the second half a few minutes before their hosts, probably having had a few home truths said to them after a disappointing first half performance.
The half time team talk must have worked with Leeds starting much the stronger in the second half; Robinson had Leeds first chance of the half with Fielding making a fine save.
Fielding had to make another good save from Robinson soon after again with Leeds turning up the heat looking for the equaliser.
Becchio thought he had equalised for Leeds but his effort came back off the woodwork.
Leeds finally found the equaliser in controversial circumstances. Crowe was lying injured for Northampton but Leeds carried on with the approval of referee Chris Foy and in form striker Jermaine Beckford got his sixth goal in eight days.
Leeds almost took the lead soon afterwards when Delph`s shot was well saved by Fielding.
Bad news for Leeds on 78 minutes when Jermaine Beckford went down injured and was replaced straight away by Howson.
Leeds were now totally dominating looking for a winner and Becchio and Howson both tested the keeper.
Leeds were then caught with the sucker punch when Nicolas Bignall headed in for Northampton with only three minutes left on the clock.
The home side comfortably saw out the final minutes with the goal knocking the stuffing out of Leeds.
A poor result and an injury to Jermaine Beckford meant a miserable trip back up the M1 for Leeds.
