Simon Grayson is set to give trials to two players next week.
Leonardo Poggi is a 19-year-old left footed centre back who is currently on loan at Bologna from fellow Serie A side AC Cesena.
The young defender is contracted to Cesena until the summer of 2011.
They are also giving a trial to 18-year-old midfielder/forward Shaun Greenfield.
The American was included in the national under 20 team in the summer for the Cor Groenewegan Tournament in Uitgeest, Holland.
Greenfield played for top Spanish side Atletico Madrid at 14 in their youth side.
He played for FC Chernomorets in Ukraine last season and has had trials at Italian side Bari recently.
