Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson feels the club don`t need to sign another defender.

Leeds are down to the bare bones in the centre of defence after early season injuries to Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington.

Cooper missed the midweek draw with Fulham whilst Pennington hasn`t featured since suffering an ankle injury on the opening weekend of the season.

Jansson, who completed a permanent move to Leeds this summer, was partnered by 21-year-old Conor Shaughnessy in midweek, who had an impressive game.

Despite the injuries, Jansson feels Leeds don`t need to strengthen in the centre of defence before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

“I don`t think we are going to need one more,” Jansson told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Matthew has shown how good he is as he started the season really well.

“And Conor was really good in the last game. I don`t want to say Conor is number four (fourth choice) but if you have a number four he has to be young, he has to be talented and a man for the future.

“You don`t have to get a player on loan only for one season to be number four. It is better to have a young player from around the Academy and if there is any trouble then we can also have Luke in the centre.

“I don`t think it`s going to be a problem and I don`t think we need another defender.”

Leeds are hoping that Cooper will come back into the squad for the weekend clash at Sunderland but there is still no timescale on how long Pennington will be sidelined after he suffered an ankle injury at Bolton Wanderers.
