New Leeds United captain Jonny Howson is hoping to rise to the challenge of captaining the side and lead the side back to the Premier League.

Howson is no stranger to wearing the armband having deputised for Richard Naylor on many occasions.

The 23-year-old Leeds born lead is now hoping that his installation as the full time captain can see him rise to the challenge and lead Leeds back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Howson said, “I`m obviously delighted. Hopefully we can go up this year. That would make it even more of an honour. But just being captain is a great achievement.
“It was a funny situation when I was vice captain. I really didn`t expect that. But the experience of being captain in the absence of Nayls helped me a lot. This is a new challenge in itself and hopefully I can rise to that as well.”

Howson was the only ever present in the Leeds side last season, starting all 46 games and he was captain in the absence of Naylor on 33 occasions.

He almost helped lead Leeds to the play offs, finishing one place outside those positions in seventh place.

On a personal note, he enjoyed a fantastic season, scoring on eleven occasions, and his best return in a season so far.

His eleven goals included a first hat trick for the club in the 4-1 win at Scunthorpe United.

It was all capped off when he won his first cap at England under 21 level, when he played in the friendly in Italy in February.
