Leeds United midfielder John Howson says he will be delighted if he takes over the club captaincy on a permanent basis after the departure of Richard Naylor in the summer.

Howson as been the vice captain at Leeds for the past two seasons and stood in on a regular basis whilst Naylor was out of the side.

The midfielder was the only ever present in the side last season and wore the captains armband on thirty-three occasions.

Howson first wore the armband in April 2008 at the age of 19, making him the youngest captain at the club since Billy Bremner.

The Leeds lad is now hoping that he will get the job on a permanent basis. Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Howson said, “I don`t know what the manager`s thinking and it`s entirely up to him.
“Nothing`s been said yet but if he goes with me then I`d be over the moon. I`ve said before that captaining the club last season was a really proud moment and I gained a lot of experience from that.
“If it happens then I`ll be delighted but if not then I`ll respect the manager`s decision and support whoever he decides to go with.”

The 23 year old settled into life in the championship with some sterling performances last season.

His form saw him win his first England cap at under 21 level when he made his debut against Italy in February

He also netted on eleven occasions, his best total since making his debut in 2006.
