New Leeds United first team coach David Hockaday says he intends to strip things back to the bare bones as he looks to get rid of what he calls ‘excess baggage`.
Hockaday met the Leeds squad on Thursday a week after taking over from Brian McDermott who was sacked at the end of May.
The former Forest Green Rovers manager is taking his first head coach position in the Football League and he is looking to improve a Leeds side that finished a disappointing 15th in the Championship last season.
Speaking to the BBC, Hockaday said, “The new structure is that Leeds need to be leaner. There’s excess baggage in every department.
‘We’re going to strip back to the bones and then start fleshing things out. I want us to have a tight-knit group where everyone has each other’s back.’
Leeds released thirteen players at the end of last season with senior players Jamie Ashdown, El Hadji Diouf, Michael Brown, Danny Pugh, Luke Varney, Paul Green and Adam Drury amongst those not retained.
